Modernminhwa

Founder of Modernminhwa

She has been fascinated by the simplified expressions and nature-inspired subjects found in 19th-century Korean folk paintings (Minhwa), and has been working with these as her focus. While her work begins with motifs from old folk paintings, it doesn't simply imitate them. Instead, it incorporates stories of herself and us living in the present era, which she has named 'Modernminhwa'.

  • Her work primarily uses powdered pigment as a coloring material on hanji (traditional Korean paper). She says that the process of repeating brush strokes tens to hundreds of times until the ultimate color emerges, as the pigment seeps into the paper and builds up density inside rather than showing the material's characteristics on the surface, is like meditation in itself.
